>>  Guildford
>> 3rd June 2005

Start time: 1000
End time: 1700
Cost: £40 - £120

Summary:
Working together - the conference

This conference is designed for: corporate investors, corporate venture capitalists, business
development managers, licensing executives, technology transfer officers, entrepreneurs,
CEOs, FDs and senior managers of emerging growth companies.

Businesses in partnership – 'corporate venturing'
Ventures between larger corporations and smaller, often technology-based, high growth
businesses can offer solutions for both. The opportunity can enable the larger company to
innovate and broaden its business; it can allow the smaller company to grow faster. The venture
can provide both a route to market and on-going commercial success.
This conference will provide the opportunity for participants to share and discuss the strategies
and practice of corporate venturing, an increasingly important aspect of today's business
environment. Participants will include key industry leaders and managers of innovative younger
firms, some of whom will become the leaders of the future. Participants will be able to explore
ideas, establish new relationships and network with potential partners.

Working with Universities
Though traditionally thought of as a relationship between large, private sector corporations and
small firms with high growth potential, corporate venturing might also take place with public
sector organisations. Indeed, in order to improve the competitiveness of the UK economy, the
government has, for some time, been encouraging the country's universities not just to
commercialise their intellectual property through new venture creation, but to collaborate with
British industry and, in particular, to use their technological and business expertise to help small
and medium sized enterprises develop and grow.
To this end, numerous government initiatives (including STEP, KTP and HEROBAC) have been
introduced and most universities now possess their own measures to meet these objectives.
These range from premises (incubators, science parks, etc) to technology transfer offices and
outreach or industrial liaison units, the aim being to enable both large and small firms to benefit
from leading edge business and technological research. The conference will explore the benefits
of such collaboration with higher education.

Exhibition
As well as having the opportunity to network with your peers in business, we are delighted that a
number of local universities, agencies (government and other) and advisers have a presence at
the show. They are all actively involved in providing practical help and support to businesses keen
to establish strategic relationships with other businesses and/or universities. We would encourage
all participants to take some time to visit their stands in the exhibition area to find out more about
the very real help that they can offer.

Our thanks go to exhibition sponsors, Grant Thornton and Smith and Williamson, for their support.
Other exhibitors include Business Link Surrey, Business Link Wessex, SEEDA Enterprise Hubs,
SION, the University of Portsmouth and the University of Southampton.
