13th May 2003 - SION Business Angels event 12 May - Report

Our meeting was well supported with Investors travelling in from London, Guildford, Brighton, Chichester, Southampton and the New Forest.

Starting with a general networking session over lunch and moving on to the formal 15 minute presentations at 1pm.

The meeting had 5 companies presenting from the following sectors with proposals to raise between £170k and £500k:

Pharmaceutical £300k

Biological alternatives to current antibiotics and pesticides.
Total investment of over £500,000, with £250,000 received from private investors. It has a portfolio of intellectual property. It has a near market opportunity in both veterinary and clinical applications with a initial clinical trials planned for May 2003.

Leisure Business Services £500k

A Web based capacity clearance tool for golf courses. Its business model perhaps best thought of as the equivalent of Expedia or e-bookers in the golf industry. It allows courses to relax or increase their handicap restrictions to increase yield.

Software - Voice Recognition £250k

Using Speaker Independent Natural Language Speech Recognition (NLSR). Targeting the telecommunications infrastructure providers this virtual telephone operator is being actively marketed through resellers now. Further solutions that replace the tedious key-press driven multilevel menus now widely in use by telesales are in the pipeline.

Software - Mobile Telecommunications £300k

A suite of software to allow non-programmers to develop interactive text (SMS) based mobile services. Won £45k SMART award, £105k award imminent. The solution has been in revenue generating beta test since February 2003 and is ready for commercial launch now.

Sports Safety Equipment £170k

A device with patents granted in the USA and approved for grant in EEC territories. It has won a £100k SMART award and has had £85,000 funding from business angels.
